“Warriors at Ease: Healing Strategies for Veterans with PTSD” is the theme of the next “Reel & Meal” film program on Monday, Dec. 21, at the New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt (113 Centerway, in Roosevelt Center). The free screening starts 7 pm after an optional vegan buffet at $14 is served from 6:30 pm.
This film depicts how some veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan learn to cope with their wartime experiences by practicing a form of meditation called “iRest.” It improves sleep, decreases anxiety, lessens chronic pain and helps them manage their emotions. Robin Carnes, co-founder of the Warriors at Ease project, will lead discussion following the film. In 2013, the Smithsonian Institute honored her for her pioneering work using yoga and meditation to combat the stress and trauma of veterans with PTSD. Kelly Sauter, a Navy Veteran and Warriors at Ease teacher, will join her.
